In the middle of this pandemic summer, it’s been a surprising gift to have Hamilton lyrics running through our heads. (You too?) Almost as a straight up contradiction to the nightly news, the Schuyler sisters sing: “Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now!” So, inspired by Hamilton, this Raising a Writer message is dedicated to looking around at some of the awesome resources for young writers we are lucky enough to have at our fingertips right now. We found lots while building online summer camp. Here are 3 of the best: 1. John Spencer’s Video Writing Prompts There are about 500 of these on his YouTube channel and they are a fun jump start to new writing ideas. We didn’t end up using any of these at camp this year, so if your writer was with us, don’t worry! These will all be brand new!
2. Jess Smart Smiley’s Let’s Make Comics
Now this is something that we DID use in camp, but everyone should know about it! Jess was our guest author and his book, Let’s Make Comics, is BRILLIANT for helping writers build their creativity through discovering new characters and ways to tell stories. If your writer did receive this at camp, pull it out again and remind your writer of how fun this is. Jess is a master at using his craft to engage young writers!
3. Writing Exercises for Children Here is another GEM you’ll want to bookmark and use over and over. The title sounds a little dry, but truly this is SUCH A FIND! From story lines, to headlines, to picture prompts–this site is bursting with possibilities for your writer. We are linking you to the children’s page, but the homepage is also an excellent resource for older writers. Just play around with it for 30 seconds and you’ll see:)
